It was a rainy, nasty day at Vito Capizzo Stadium on Saturday, but the boys lacrosse team returned to action with a matchup against Groton-Dunstable High School and won in convincing fashion 12-3.

A bright light that shined in the miserable conditions was junior attacker Nolen Mosscrop. Going back to last year, four of the seven goals Nantucket scored in their state title game were by Arann Hanlon and Mosscrop. Due to injury, Mosscrop has had to slowly ramp up his playing time to begin the season. But on Saturday, Nantucket caught a glimpse of what that tandem could do this spring with each player scoring five goals to anchor the Whaler attack.

“We put Arann down at attack for a while and it worked really well,” Whaler head coach Sam Aloisi said. “The problem is we can’t really afford to lose him out of the midfield, so that can’t be an everyday thing. But (Nolen and Arann) play well together. They’re both very, very smart players and they’re very good on top of it. It’s good to have Nolen back. We still have to be a little bit cautious, but he has been cleared to play.”

Aloisi said senior midfielder David Cirillo did a solid job in the faceoff dot against a strong opponent. He said overall, the defense had a good day.

“We played alright,” Aloisi said. “We came out strong but then had a big letdown in the second quarter. A lot of little things added up. The weather didn’t help, but both teams played in the rain. It was pretty sloppy overall. We gave up a couple goals in the second quarter. One of them was a really stupid goal, but other than that we told them a couple things they needed to work on in halftime and our guys came right out, responded, and did well in the third.”

Nantucket has a busy, difficult week ahead as they look to build off their strong start with three challenging road matchups.

They will begin the stretch by traveling to play Dartmouth High School on Tuesday, April 29th at 3:30 p.m.

On Thursday, Nantucket will travel to Falmouth for a tough game against the Clippers on May 1st at 3 p.m.

Then to cap off the stretch on Saturday, May 3rd, the Whalers will travel to Cohasset for a matchup with one of the state’s top teams this year. That game will begin at 4 p.m.
