The United Arab Emirates and former Nantucket soccer player Caio Canedo were eliminated from contention to enter the 2022 World Cup field following a 2-1 defeat to Australia on Tuesday.

Canedo scored UAE's lone goal of the match. He finished his World Cup Qualifying run with five goals and an assist in 14 World Cup Qualifying games and scored two more goals in five International Friendlies games.

Canedo, 31, is also a forward/attacking midfielder for Emirati club Al Ain. Canedo moved to Nantucket in the fourth grade from Brazil. After playing two seasons for the high school team and completing seven seasons at different levels of Nantucket's soccer program, he went pro in January of 2007, received dual citizenship in the UAE, and had been a key contributor for the UAE National Team since 2019 as they attempted to sneak into the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
