Girls Swimming Beats Sandwich, Boys Swimming Comes Up Short

The Nantucket girls and boys swim teams hosted the Sandwich Blue Knights for a meet Wednesday afternoon. The girls went home with a 96-81 victory while the boys lost 80-63, however the boys were tied 59-59 entering the last event of the evening (400 free relay) but didn’t have enough swimmers to field a heat.
The swim of the night goes to Whaler sophomore Jake Johnson, who faced a very formidable opponent in Sandwich junior Dawson Milligan in the 100 yard freestyle.
Johnson was behind Milligan early but made up ground on his turns. He ended up beating Milligan by an eighth of second with a score of 50.49 to Milligan’s 51.28.
Both Johnson and Milligan’s times fell below the state qualifying time for that race of 52.10. It was a personal best for Johnson in his swimming career that is just getting started.
Other state and sectional qualifying times from Wednesday for Nantucket swimmers are below.
Jake Johnson in the 200 yard freestyle earned a time of 1:54.00.
Hannah Gerardi earned a sectional time in the 200 yard individual medley of 2:26.45.
Justin Roethke earned a sectional time in the 200 yard IM of 2:13.92.
As mentioned above, Johnson earned a state time in the 100 free of 50.49.
Hannah Harrington earned a sectional time in the 500 free of 5:51.94.
Roethke earned a sectional time in the 100 yard backstroke of 1:00.22.
Gerardi earned a state time in the 100 yard breaststroke of 1:13.98 while Myah Johnson earned a sectional time of 1:16.17 in the same event.
The Whaler's next meet will be Saturday on the road against Martha’s Vineyard.
