The #8 seeded girls tennis team took down #25 Randolph High School on a breezy Sunday afternoon – battling the conditions to secure their first tournament win of the spring 4-1.

Led by second singles player Andrea Bunlerssak, Whaler head coach Luke Thornewill said he liked seeing the compete out of his team despite the strong gusts impacting their shots and movements on the court while also overcoming a long period of time between games.

“Andrea just brought her normal sort of game and really just had control of the entire match," Thornewill said. "That was sort of relieving to see because the other (singles) were struggling. Vicky (Todorova, third single and team captain) couldn't quite get her rhythm. The wind was tough for her today, and her opponent was a good player. Vicky was playing a good player. We had a big break. A lot of the kids didn't play from Wednesday until now because of (Senior Ball) and weather and stuff, so that threw them off a little bit as well. So they all came out pretty cold, which was a disadvantage.”

Below are the results from the match:

First Single:
Elis Vieth beat her opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

Second Single:
Andrea Bunlerssak beat her opponent in straight sets 6-0, 6-4.

Third Single:
Vicky Todorova lost to her opponent 4-6, 4-6.

First Doubles:
Sutton LeBrecht and Sara Dussault won their match in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

Second Doubles:
Fiona Keltz and Gabby Fee won their match in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.

Assistant head coach Mark Gerardi, who oversaw the doubles players on Sunday, said Dussault and LeBrecht struggled early with the wind but were able to persevere after the slow start. He said he felt Keltz and Fee played flawlessly all afternoon.

“It was almost like they weren’t even playing in the wind,” Gerardi said. “I don’t know if it was being on the side over there, but they just seemed to be in sync, hit the ball really well, and were making their shots. This team, for being a 25 seed, we really had to work for this.”

Nantucket now advances to the Round of 16 to play #24 seeded Advanced Math & Science Academy Charter School after they upset #9 Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School, who finished their regular season 20-0, in the Round of 32. That match will be played Wednesday, June 4th at 4 p.m. at the Backus Lane courts.
