The Nantucket Athletic Department announced Thursday morning that Jillian Fey has been hired as the new varsity girls hockey head coach.
“The Athletic Department is incredibly excited to welcome Jillian to our Whaler coaching staff,” athletic director Travis Lombardi said. “Her passion for hockey, dedication to player development, and connection to the Nantucket community make her a perfect addition to our Whaler coaching staff. We know she will have a positive impact on the athletes she will be coaching, both on and off the ice, and serve as an outstanding role model for our girls.”
Fey is an island native with a strong and impressive hockey background, which includes a four year career playing NCAA Division I Hockey at Boston College, where she helped the Eagles reach the Frozen Four in 2019 and the NCAA Tournament in 2021. She developed her love for the game through Nantucket Youth Hockey and has remained actively involved in the local hockey community since returning to the island in 2022, assisting with youth hockey, summertime skills clinics, private lessons, and the high school girls varsity program as an assistant head coach.
"I am incredibly honored and excited to become the head coach of the Nantucket High School girls hockey program,” Fey said. “Having grown up playing hockey on Nantucket, this community and the sport have played a significant role in shaping who I am. My goal is to build a program centered on accountability, hard work, teamwork, and a shared commitment to improvement, while creating an environment where players can develop their skills, compete, support one another, and build lasting friendships and memories."
Fey said she is looking forward to building on the foundation established by the program's previous coaches and players, strengthening the connection between youth hockey and the high school program, and creating opportunities for future generations of girls to get involved in the sport.
"The Nantucket High School Athletic Department looks forward to the next chapter of Whaler girls hockey under Fey’s leadership," Lombardi said. "Her experience as a collegiate athlete, commitment to player development, and deep roots in the Nantucket hockey community will be valuable assets as the program continues to grow."
