This Whaler Sports Roundup includes senior day photos from the cross country meet and boys soccer game on Tuesday, as well as an update on the volleyball team following a road matchup with the St. John Paul II Lions.
Cross Country Hosts Senior Meet
The cross country team hosted the Nauset Warriors on Tuesday for their senior day meet. Below are some photos from the ceremony and meet taken by Chris Tran.
Boys Soccer Ties Sandwich
The Whaler boys soccer team hosted the Sandwich Blue Knights on Tuesday for their senior game and the two squads played one another to a 2-2 tie. Nantucket head coach Rich Brannigan II acknowledged the struggles his team had finding the back of the net.
Sandwich struck first in the 17th minute of the first half but Nantucket answered one minute before halftime on a Stoyan Popov goal, assisted by Aldo Lemus.
"Most of the second half was played in Sandwich’s defensive end where the visitors goalie made eight saves," Brannigan said.
With two minutes left in the match, the Whalers earned a corner kick and Jayson Ayala was able to score on a header off an Aldo Lemus cross. But then as time was about to expire, Sandwich converted on a penalty kick to tie the game.
Nantucket is now 9-4-2 overall and 8-1-1 in Cape & Island Atlantic Division play.
The Whalers will be back in action when they travel to Dennis-Yarmouth on Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. game. Below are some photos from the game taken by Chris Tran.
In other Whaler sports news, the volleyball team traveled to the Cape on Monday to play the St. John Paul II Lions and won 3-1. They are now 9-5 and with just three games left on their regular season schedule, will finish with a record higher than .500 - automatically clinching them a spot in the MIAA Division 3 state tournament.
