The Whaler softball team rode a nine-run first inning to an 18-6 victory over the Nauset Warriors Wednesday afternoon in five innings.
The Whalers were able to remain patient at the plate while the Warrior’s starting pitcher had trouble finding the strike zone, allowing Nantucket to take control of the game as quick as they did.
Head coach Chris Maury said he was happy with his team’s effort. He said he felt like this win was much needed following his team’s last game, a loss to the Falmouth Clippers.
“It’s good to get back in the win column,” Maury said. “When they switched pitchers we went from having that patience and control to take the walks that led to runs early on to hitting the ball really well. Especially on a day like today where it’s windy and nasty out, I mean, there were a couple balls today where if it wasn’t windy like this, they’d still be rolling away.”
Maury said his team was good in the field for the most part. He said Raegen Perry’s defense was key for his team and her assertiveness to call for fly balls in the infield.
Two of the biggest hits for Nantucket came in the third inning. Both Perry and Jenn Calles ripped line drives that went for triples, but likely would have been home runs in better weather.

Nantucket let up a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, bringing Nauset within a run entering the bottom of the fifth. The mercy rule in softball is a 12 run lead after five innings. Nantucket was patient at the plate and got a pair of runners in scoring position with Perry at the plate. Senior Quincy Sullivan came into the game as a pinch runner and was able to score with Perry at the plate on a wild pitch.
The Whalers are now 3-4 this season and will travel to Dennis-Yarmouth, who is 7-4 this season, on Friday for a 4 p.m. game.
