Sports Roundup: Boys Hockey Wins, Girls Swim Wins Senior Meet

This Whaler sports roundup includes an update on the boys hockey team following a home victory over a Cape & Island rival, the girls and boys swim team following their senior meet, and the girls basketball team following a home game.
Boys Hockey Beats DY 4-1
The boys hockey team hosted the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins Wednesday night and won 4-1 to improve their record to 2-4 this season, with both of those victories coming on the island.
"All cylinders were firing properly today," Whaler head coach Jack Moran said. "I loved watching the game. I was telling them earlier, as long as you're moving, when you move, you win. When you're standing around and you're not doing your job is when you end up giving it up.”
Senior defenseman Andrew Lavin got the scoring going for the Whalers just over a minute into the game, and earned praise from Moran afterwards for his play of late as an emerging leader of this team.
“Andrew skating down there and scoring that first goal, I think I was more excited about that than anything else," Moran said. "He's been waiting a long time to do that, and I'm glad to see that he finally did it. He was a rockstar today. Everybody was. We ran a couple of lines. Just kept alternating back and forth.”
Senior captain Canton Jenkinson made it 2-0 with just under 10 minutes to go and Nantucket took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission after a DY goal with 2:18 left in the first.
In the second period, senior captain Jeremy Jenkinson buried a goal in front of the net after receiving a pass from his brother behind the net to make it 3-1 with 5:19 to play in the second. That score stood heading into the final period.
As the Dolphins tried to cut into the lead, junior goalie Thomas Schroeder was steady in net and turned away any chances manufactured by the DY offense. Senior winger Ben Freeman put the finishing touch on Nantucket’s home victory with a goal with just 1:02 to play.
"Thomas again, I don't know what the shot count was, but the kid stood on his head again," Moran said. “He's been fantastic. I love watching the kids just keep getting better and better and better, and that gives the guys in front all that more confidence to start doing what they do. It was a lot of fun. Let's hope we can keep the momentum going. Coming off of our last game, I had a really good feeling coming into this one. They were ready. They were fired. It was a good thing to watch, it really was. When you go back to our first game against the Vineyard and look at where we are now just in that six-game span, we keep exponentially getting better it seems.”
Nantucket will try to improve to 3-4 on Wednesday, January 21st on the road against the Monomoy Sharks at 4 p.m. You can view more photos from this game here.

Girls Hoops Loses At Home
The girls basketball team hosted the St. John Paul II Lions Thursday evening and lost 49-32. Nantucket trailed by just seven points at halftime (23-16), but a quick run by the Lions to begin the second half extended Nantucket’s deficit into the double digits as SJP led 39-24 after three quarters.
“I think our defense was the best part of our game," Paterson said. “Our offense was flat. A lot of wasted time on offense, kind of just dribbling around. Turnovers probably got us on offense. But I don't think the score reflects how that game was played. That's a very good basketball team, and I thought defensively we locked them down pretty well.”
Marin Mooney led Nantucket with 12 points and continues to lead a stingy Nantucket defense. The Whalers will try to get back in the win column when they host the Barnstable Red Hawks on Monday, January 19th at 5 p.m.
