Sports Roundup: Girls Hoops & Indoor Track Earn Wins
David Creed •
This Whaler sports roundup includes updates on the girls basketball team after they bounced back from a road defeat on Monday to win a Tuesday home matchup against Cape Cod Academy, the indoor boys and girls track teams following victories, and the boys basketball team following a road loss.
Girls Hoops Improves To .500 On The Season
The girls basketball team sailed home Monday evening frustrated following a 40-13 loss to the Monomoy Sharks, but embraced the opportunity to jump right back into action Tuesday afternoon when they welcomed the Cape Cod Academy Seahawks to the island.
The Whalers won 58-13 after immediately taking control of the game with a dominant first quarter where they led 16-0 after not allowing a basket.
"Little bit of a confidence boost after (Monday)," Whaler head coach Angela Paterson said. "Yesterday's game was rough. We did not come to play. So today, turning it around, that was a young team that we played, but it was nice to see our players after yesterday's game come back, change it around, and play hard.”
Nantucket led 33-3 at half and from there, were able to rotate through their lineup. Marin Mooney led the team with 12 points while Quinn Canty had 11 points.
"It's good to see where we're at and what we need to change," Paterson said. "We have St. John Paul on Thursday, so that's going to be a completely different game than this game. So we're going to have to switch gears in practice and go from there.”
Paterson said she liked the play from Rosie Sullivan, who was one of nine Whalers to score in the game.
"Rosie off the bench, she comes out and plays hard," Paterson said. "She adjusts when you ask her to.”
Nantucket, now 4-4 this season, will try to improve to 5-4 when they host the St. John Paul II Lions on Thursday, January 15th at 5 p.m. You can view more photos from this game here.
