This Whaler sports roundup includes an update on the boys basketball team following a stunning home loss to Dennis-Yarmouth after leading by 21 points with seven minutes to play, the boys hockey team, and results from the boys & girls swim meet on Tuesday.
Boys Hoops Lose To DY
For three quarters and 50 seconds, the Whalers seemed to be clicking on all cylinders Thursday night at Nantucket High School while they hosted the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins. They jumped out to a quick 25-13 lead after one quarter that was capped with a buzzer-beater three-point shot from freshman Burke Lombardi and led 67-46 with 7:07 left in the fourth quarter.
But DY made an improbable comeback that left the entire gymnasium stunned – outscoring the Whalers 34-10 in the final seven minutes to hand Nantucket an 80-77 loss.
"Turnovers. We talk about it every day, all day, for the first six games," Whaler head coach Willis Ferreira said. "We turn the ball over too much. I got a lot of young kids out there trying to get through it. They've never been in that experience before. It sucks but I think we'll learn from it in the long run.”
Lombardi led the team with 23 points – including 14 points in the first quarter. Junior big man Ethan Jarrett finished with 20 points. Junior Vallon Jeanty finished with 13 points. Sophomore Aspen Sylvia finished with 12 points.
The Whalers are now 1-5 this season and they will try to earn their second win on Tuesday, January 21st on the road against Cape Cod Academy at 3:45 p.m. This game will be the first of six straight road games for Nantucket.
