Sports Roundup: Swimming Sweeps Nauset, Girls & Boys Hoops Earn Wins
David Creed •
This Whaler sports roundup includes updates on the boys & girls swim teams following their home meet against Nauset, the girls basketball team following a victory at home against Falmouth Academy, the boys basketball team following a blowout road victory, and the indoor track team following a road meet at Wheaton College.
Boys & Girls Swim Beat Nauset
The boys & girls swim teams beat the Nauset Warriors at home Tuesday evening 90-60 and 94-52 respectively. Head coach Dylan Jones was thrilled with many of the performances of his swimmers but pointed in particularly to the performances of junior Sara Dussault and sophomore Eli MacIver.
“Sara Dussault and Eli MacIver, their 200 IMs (individual medleys) were great," Jones said. "I know Sara got her state cut on that. She's been literally hundredths of seconds (away) multiple times. So to finally get that was huge for her. I think Eli got his as well. If not, it was definitely a season best swim and his 100 breaststroke. They swam great.”
The times from Tuesday’s meet were not available after the meet. We will publish some of the best times in our Friday newsletter. The Whaler’s next meet is scheduled for Saturday, January 25th on the road against Martha’s Vineyard at 12:30 p.m.
Girls Hoops Earn Win Over Falmouth Academy
The Whaler girls basketball team earned a 47-27 victory over Falmouth Academy Tuesday evening behind 12 points from senior captain Maddie Lombardi and 10 points from senior Mani Taveras.
The win also marked the first victory for Jillian Fraker as the program’s head coach after she was suddenly thrust into the role following the dismissal of former head coach Rafael Osona last week.
“It’s all the players,” Fraker said after the game. “Amazing communication all around, the intensity was there. They were having fun. The last couple of days, all of them have just been bringing it. It’s a privilege to coach them.”
Fraker said she felt her team did a good job sticking to their game plan – including a full court press they implemented in practice over the course of the past few days – and that helped them hold off any potential Falmouth Academy comebacks despite the Whaler’s lead being trimmed to single digits at times in the second half.
“We didn't all of a sudden switch and play Falmouth's (game),” she said. “We kept up with our game, which is what we needed to do the whole time. It was good to see.”
Fraker said as the season progresses, her message to the team is to have fun.
“It's all about having fun," Fraker said. I mean I coach human beings, and so the fact that they play basketball right now is awesome, but we're working on everything. We live on an island 30 miles out to sea. They're committed to the basketball team. Angela (Paterson) and I are committed to helping them just work on themselves. Basketball is a part of that.”
The Whalers are now 2-2 this season and their next game is scheduled for Friday, January 24th on the road against Sturgis West at 5:30 p.m. You can view more photos from the swim meet and girls basketball game by clicking here.
Boys Hoops Earn Convincing Win Over Cape Cod Academy
The boys basketball team has been knocking on the door of a win in recent games despite facing a difficult schedule, and on Tuesday they went on the road to play Cape Cod Academy and won easily by a score of 84-54.
Nantucket was led by junior big man Ethan Jarrett, who scored 30 points including 21 in the second half. Junior point guard Amare Bramwell finished with 15 points. Senior Jake Haigh finished with eight points. Junior Vallon Jeanty finished with seven points.
