Sports Roundup: Cross Country Competes In Twilight Meet, Field Hockey Beats Whitman-Hanson

This Whaler sports roundup includes updates on the cross country team after their twilight meet on the Cape over the weekend, the field hockey team after another convincing victory, and the volleyball team.
Murray Breaks Own School 5K Record
The Whaler boys cross country team competed in the Bob Glennon Twilight Cross Country Invitational Meet over the weekend at the Cape Cod Fairgrounds and had a strong showing that included a new record time for their senior captain.
Rory Murray, after breaking the Nantucket High School 5K record late last month during the Bay State Invitational after running a 17:43, broke his own record during the Twilight meet.
The previous record was set by Aidan McCormack in 2020, when he ran a 17:46. Over the weekend, Murray ran the 5K in 17:17.

Field Hockey Shuts Out Whitman-Hanson
The Nantucket field hockey team continues to be red hot and soundly beat the Whitman-Hanson Panthers Friday afternoon in a 7-0 victory to improve their record to 9-2-2 this season. They had previously beaten the Panthers on the road 3-0 on Sept. 7.
The Whalers have now shut out their opponents in eight of their nine wins this fall and are outscoring their opponents 30-14.
The goals on Friday were scored by six different players. Junior Marin Mooney had two goals. Senior Sam Zadroga, senior Caroline Collette, junior Clementine Kelly, junior Sadie Paterson, and sophomore Evie Phelps each had one goal apiece.
In the latest state tournament power rankings released on Friday prior to the Whaler’s win over the Panthers, Nantucket was the #11 seed in the Div. 4 rankings. They will try to get their win total to double digits on Tuesday, October 15 when they host the Sturgis East Storm at 5:15 p.m. The Whalers beat the Storm 2-0 on the road late last month on Sept. 26.

Volleyball Splits Road Trip
The Nantucket volleyball team traveled off island this weekend to play a pair of games against Frontier Regional High School and Ludlow High School.
The Whalers beat Ludlow, ranked #21 in the Div. 3 state tournament rankings 3-2 and lost to Frontier, who is ranked #4 in the Div. 4 state tournament rankings, 1-3.
In the match against Ludlow, the sets were as followed.
Set One: 25-16 Nantucket
Set Two: 25-22 Nantucket
Set Three: 11-25 Ludlow
Set Four: 17-25 Ludlow
Set Five: 15-11 Nantucket
It was the Whalers third straight win and improved their record to 5-10. They were led by junior Mariana Silva and her six aces; seniors Ashley Vizioli, Leah Crowley, and Rihanna Cranston who each had three kills; and senior captain Vicky Todorova and her 12 digs.
But the Whalers were unable to sweep the road trip when they faced one of the state’s top teams in Div. 4 but put up a valiant fight. The set results from that match are below.
Set One: 18-25 Frontier
Set Two: 25-20 Nantucket
Set Three: 20-25 Frontier
Set Four: 17-25 Frontier
The Whalers were led by Silva again when it came to serving. She finished with a team-high five aces. Crowley and Cranston each had six kills. Todorova had another 12 digs and 36 receives.
Nantucket is now 5-11 this season and on Friday, they came in as the #21 seed in the latest bracket. They will try to earn their sixth win of the season on Thursday, October 17 when they travel to the Cape to face St. John Paul II at 4:30 p.m. Nantucket beat SJP in their season/home opener on Sept. 4 3-1.

The girls soccer team is at home facing Sturgis West at 2:45 p.m.,
The field hockey team is at home facing Sturgis East at 3:30 p.m.,
