The Whaler field hockey team earned themselves a gutsy 1-0 shutout victory Wednesday afternoon at home against the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins behind a second quarter goal off the stick of senior Sadie Paterson, and the victory had head coach Dan Weber fired up about his team’s effort.

"We talked about it at practice yesterday, we didn't practice outside, but we practiced inside and we watched a little film and we talked about doing the little things and the hard things that win you a game," Weber said. "I don't think we played fantastic today. I thought we played well. I thought we were gritty, and I thought we did the hard things that win you a game. I thought the effort was high. I thought the want was high, and I think it showed on the field. I don't think it was the prettiest thing in the world, but it was the girls doing the things that win you a tight game like that. That's what I'm most proud of. They played hard, they played with grit, and they played with intensity, and they put pressure and made it tough on the other team and grinded it out for a win.”

The shutout was the fourth of the season for senior goalie and captain Shelbi Harimon. She made the save of the day in the middle of the fourth quarter with the Dolphins desperately trying to score the equalizer when she made a kick save that led to a rebound, eventually cleared by the Whaler defense and out of harms way.

"You come to expect that of her," Weber said of Harimon. "It is great, but we sure will miss it when she's gone. She's confident and she's aggressive. She would much rather give up a goal having come and got the ball than sat back and waited for it. I love that about her because I want the same thing. I think that in most things in the game, if you're playing on the front foot, playing aggressively, you're going to put yourself in a better spot. She did a great job. She came up big in the few times that we had to come up big. I thought the corner defense was very good today too. I guess that would be like a unit MVP, but we gave up a lot of corners, and we didn't give up any goals on them. That's Carley Ray, Sophia Sullivan Lil Wullschleger, and Sophia Yelverton on that corner unit, along with Shelbi.”

On the game’s lone goal, Weber credited Clementine Kelly for starting the play off strong by getting the ball on the right wing and cutting inside. Kelly dumped it to Evie Phelps as she was running through the middle and eventually found Paterson waiting by the post where she was supposed to be - ready to bank it into an open net.

The Whalers are now 8-4 and will try to earn their ninth win of the season on Friday, October 17th at home against the St. John Paul II Lions at 4 p.m. You can view more photos from Wednesday's game here.
