The Whaler football team lost a heartbreaker Friday evening at home against the Falmouth Clippers 14-13 after failing to make a game-winning field goal as time expired.

The Whaler’s offense came from senior quarterback Eli MacIver, who scored on a 32-yard scramble in the first half and a 47-yard touchdown run by senior running back David Guillen Taveras.

Turnovers plagued the Whaler’s game, including a pair of muffed punts that were recovered by Falmouth. Nantucket’s defense, led by middle linebacker Keegan Bedell, kept Falmouth’s offense in check. The Whalers also had an opportunity at a potential field goal just before halftime, but were unable to get a snap off to spike the ball before the half ended.

Nantucket is now 1-2 this season and will try to improve to 2-2 when they travel to play the Nauset Warriors on Friday, October 9th at 4 p.m.

The girls soccer team hosted the Sandwich Blue Knights and lost 4-1 at the Nobadeer Turf Field Friday afternoon. Senior Emma Woodbury scored Nantucket’s lone goal.

The Whalers are now 3-4 this season and will try to get back to .500 when they travel to play the Falmouth Clippers on Tuesday, October 6th at 3:30 p.m.

In other Whaler sports news on the road, the boys soccer team beat the Sandwich 2-0 Friday afternoon and remain unbeaten in league play. They scored twice in the second half and shut out the Blue Knights despite being down four starters.

Whaler head coach Rich Brannigan II said his team controlled much of the match but couldn’t find the breakthrough in the opening half. He said his team applied consistent pressure and kept the Blue Knights on the defensive, but the teams went into halftime scoreless.

Junior Stoyan Popov opened the scoring in the 57th minute off a Raakin Brannigan assist to give Nantucket a 1-0 lead and the eventual game-winner. Brannigan said as his team continued to press and push the play, they added a second goal when Calvin Guevara scored off an assist from Sammy Cisneros (playing in his first varsity start). It gave the Whalers a 2-0 lead in the 64th minute. Parker Furtado made three saves in goal for Nantucket.

“It was another strong team performance — one that required patience, especially after a scoreless first half, but ultimately ended with the (us) adding another win to (our) impressive league record,” Brannigan said.

Nantucket is now 6-1 overall and 5-0 in league play. They will be back in action on Tuesday, October 6th when they host Falmouth High School at 4 p.m.

The field hockey team was also in action on Friday and lost 7-0. They are now 1-5-2 this season and will be back in action on Monday, October 5th on the road against the Falmouth Clippers at 5 p.m.
