Boys Soccer Comes Back To Beat Falmouth, Sweep Season Series
The boys soccer team completed a season sweep of the Falmouth Clippers on Tuesday following a second half comeback to win 2-1 and improve their record to 7-1 this season.
The Whalers beat Falmouth 4-2 on the road last month and found themselves playing from behind for the first time all year on the island Tuesday. The opening half concluded scoreless, and then Falmouth broke through early in the second half to take a 1-0 lead after getting behind the Whaler’s defense.
Nantucket head coach Rich Brannigan II praised his team’s quick response to the Falmouth strike, which he said was on a beautifully executed corner kick from junior Aldo Lemus who delivered a dangerous ball to the back post where junior Stoyan Popov was waiting. Popov leaped and headed it into the net to make it 1-1.
“The match remained tied until the 68th minute, when senior RJ Rudolf Thompson scored his first goal of the season to give Nantucket the lead,” Brannigan said. “Thompson attacked an unclaimed ball at the back post and used his size and determination to win the challenge, heading home what proved to be the game-winning goal.”
Brannigan said his team’s midfield trio of Calvin Guevara, Raakin Brannigan and Sam Cisneros controlled much of the play and helped the Whalers maintain possession and dictate the tempo.
“Defensively, Pedro Delgado and Nic Sosa anchored a Nantucket back line that allowed few quality opportunities,” Brannigan said. “Goalkeeper Parker Furtado was called upon to make just two saves.”
Brannigan said his team controlled much of the match while Falmouth remained compact and patient defensively, looking for opportunities to counter. Brannigan said despite falling behind, his team stayed composed and eventually found the two goals they needed to complete the comeback.
Nantucket, now 7-1, is undefeated in Cape & Islands League play with a 6-0 record. They’ll look to win their eighth game of the season on Thursday, October 8th on the road against the Nauset Warriors at 4 p.m.

The Whaler boys and girls cross country teams competed in their first home meet of the season against Falmouth High School. Below are some photos from the meet taken by Chris Tran.
In other Whaler sports news, the girls soccer team went on the road to play the Falmouth Clippers Tuesday afternoon and lost 4-1. Nantucket head coach Doug LeBrecht said his team had a great first half and held a 1-0 lead.
“We were strong and confident and kept the ball under our control,” LeBrecht said. “Harper LeBrecht had an assist on a corner kick to Emma Woodbury. Then that was it, the wheel fell off the bus and we lost 1-4.”
Nantucket is now 3-5 and will try to get back in the win column on Thursday, October 8th at home against the Nauset Warriors at 4 p.m.
The field hockey team traveled to play the Falmouth Clippers on Monday and lost a high-scoring game 5-4. Whaler head coach Dan Weber said his team played a much better game and while he is not always a huge fan of moral victories, believes this was definitely one of those.
Evie Phelps led Nantucket’s offense with a hat trick while Aliana Davis scored the other goal.
“We just hadn’t been playing good field hockey,” Weber said. “We needed to just play a solid game and not be concerned with the result. Though naturally that results in a close game.”
Nantucket is now 1-6-2 and will try to earn their second win of the season on Wednesday, October 7th on the road against the Sturgis East Storm at 4 p.m.
