In other Whaler sports news, the boys soccer team continued their fantastic start to the fall season with a 1-0 victory over the Nauset Warriors Thursday afternoon on the road. Nantucket's goal was scored by junior Stoyan Popov off an assist from senior Calvin Guevara.
Whaler head coach Rich Brannigan II said the game was tense from the start and that the first minutes proved to be a feeling out period for both teams. As the game went on, he felt his team's confidence grew.
"Halftime proved to be a moment to regroup and refine their game plan," Brannigan said. "Emphasizing quick play and unselfish passing, (our) skilled midfield of Raakin Brannigan, Aldo Lemus and Calvin Guevara found more and more success. This momentum resulted in the only goal (we) would need to win the game."
The goal was scored in the 50th minute and secured a season sweep of the Warriors for Nantucket, who beat Nauset 3-0 last month. Nantucket is now 8-1 overall and 7-0 in league play. They will be back in action on Saturday, October 10th at 1 p.m. against the Abington Green Wave.
The volleyball team went on the road to play the Rising Tide Herons on Wednesday and won 3-0 to improve their record to 5-3 this fall. The sets in the match were as followed.
