Sports Roundup: Four Teams Earn Victories To Close Out September
David Creed •
This Whaler sports roundup includes an update on the volleyball team after they earned a hard-fought victory at home, the girls soccer team after improving their record above the .500 mark, the cross-country team after a win, the golf team after another victory, and the boys soccer team.
Volleyball Takes Down Monomoy

The Whaler volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory at home Monday afternoon against the Monomoy Sharks. The win was the second on the season for Nantucket, who rallied to win three straight sets after dropping a close first set.
“I’m thrilled. I’m thrilled,” head coach Makaila Lyons said. “It feels like it’s about time. It feels like the past losses we have had, every time I bring them in for our postgame huddle and everything, most of the time I’m saying, ‘You’re doing this right, you’re doing this right. It’s going to happen for us.’ At some point they got to see it to believe it, so I just felt really happy today that they went out there and got that for themselves because hopefully it keeps their trust in me and keeps their trust in the program I’m trying to build my way.”
The sets were as followed:
Set One: Monomoy came from behind to win 26-24 after Nantucket grabbed a 24-21 lead.
Set Two: Nantucket bounced back to win 25-18.
Set Three: Nantucket won handily 25-13.
Set Four: Nantucket battled some adversity mid-set but ultimately secured the set 25-18.
The Whaler’s next game is scheduled for Wednesday, October 1st against Rising Tide at 4 p.m., however the game could be postponed due to forecasted weather conditions. You can view more photos from this game here.
Girls Soccer Shuts Out Falmouth

The girls soccer team improved their record to 5-4-2 Tuesday afternoon following a 1-0 victory over the Falmouth Clippers at the Nobadeer Turf Field. Head coach Doug LeBrecht, who is in his fourth season leading Nantucket’s program, said after the game he was thrilled to win against Falmouth for the first time.
“Ruby Steadman played awesome," LeBrecht said. "She stepped up. She was the MVP. I heard someone yelling thanking Ruby, so it's always cool when your teammates are thanking you for making good plays. What I'm super psyched about just with all the seniors leaving, since I've coached four years for varsity, it's our first time we beat Falmouth. It's the last time the girls get to play them, and they beat them.”
The lone goal of the day came on a free kick attempt by senior captain Chelsea Gross, who took it from outside the box and placed it perfectly.
The defense was strong, and goalie Madden Myers was excellent once again - making several key stops including a diving stop with 19:25 to go in the game, another stop with 17:28 to go in the game, and then one more with 8:55 to go in the game. Myers and the defense also put in some solid work to end the first half, which allowed the Whalers to hold the 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Whaler’s next match is scheduled for Thursday, October 2nd on the road against the Nauset Warriors at 4:00 p.m. You can view more photos from this game here.
