Sports Roundup: Four Whaler Teams Win To Kick Off Week

This Whaler sports roundup includes an update on the golf team following two wins on the island, the girls soccer team winning in blowout fashion on the road, the volleyball team following a road victory, the cross country teams following a road meet, and the field hockey team.

Golf Improves To 7-2 

The Whaler golf team improved to 7-2 this fall with back-to-back home victories over Cape Cod Academy on Monday and Sturgis West on Tuesday. Nantucket beat CCA 263-306 on Monday and Sturgis West 259-275 on Tuesday.

In other Whaler sports news, the girls soccer team traveled to the Cape to play the St. John Paul II Lions Tuesday afternoon and won in convincing fashion, 5-1, after scoring four unanswered goals in the second half. Nantucket head coach Doug LeBrecht said his team controlled the second half.

"(Freshman) Brianna Lara scored her first varsity goal, with a Harper LeBrecht assist," LeBrecht told the Current. "Ruby Steadman had two goals. One was a Harper LeBrecht assist and one off of a loose ball. Grace Schroeder scored off a Harper LeBrecht corner kick assist. Caroline Chatti scored on an Emma Woodbury assist. The team played very well together. Freshman Ford Veysey, outside back, was voted by her team as MVP. Midfielders controlled the game and kept offensive pressure up for our attackers."

The Whalers are now back to .500 this season with a record of 3-3, and they will attempt to win their fourth game of the season when they host the Sandwich Blue Knights on Friday, October 2nd at 4 p.m.


- The volleyball team went on the road and beat the Sturgis West Navigators in straight sets. Below are the final sets.

Bessie Aguilar led the Whalers with four kills. Viki Bozhkova led Nantucket with 11 kills while Quinn Canty had five kills. Cariela Acosta had 13 assists.

Nantucket is now 4-2 this season and will try to win their fifth match of the fall when they host the Sandwich Blue Knights on Thursday, October 1st at 4 p.m.


- The boys and girls cross country teams were on the road Tuesday afternoon against the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins and both teams won their meets. The boys won 19-44 while the girls won 25-31.

On the boys side, Brian Kimball had another great time of 17:27, which led all runners. Morry Cardona placed third with a time of 19:11, Hayden Roberts placed fourth with a time of 19:42, and Ben Congdon placed fifth with a time of 19:45.

On the girls side, Grace Hanlon placed second with a time of 21:28, Leila Noddin placed fourth with a time of 22:40, and Anna Cronin placed fifth with a time of 22:43.

Both teams will finally have a home meet when they host the Falmouth Clippers on Tuesday, October 6th at 4 p.m.


- The field hockey team lost back-to-back games to start their week. They lost 3-2 to Barnstable on the road Monday afternoon and 5-0 on the road against the Nauset Warriors on Tuesday. The Whaler's goals against Barnstable were scored by Evie Phelps and Clare Oberly. Nantucket is now 1-4-2 and will be back in action on Friday, October 2nd at 3:30 p.m.
