The Nantucket girls basketball team welcomed the Cape Cod Academy Seahawks to the island Monday afternoon and despite falling into an early 12-5 hole after one quarter, beat the Seahawks 41-33 to improve their record to 4-3 this season. It was the first game of a back-to-back, and the Whalers won the second game as well 46-16 against the Rising Tide Herons.

“The biggest thing was our goal of the game was to have fewer turnovers today than we did on Saturday,” head coach Jillian Fraker said after the team’s win on Monday. “We had 40 team turnovers (Saturday) so that’s hopefully an easy thing to beat, but the whole team kind of rallied around that. As a result my bench was deep, I could keep subbing. The bench was almost louder than the players on the court, which was awesome.”

The Whalers were led on Monday by Marin Mooney, who finished with a team-high 13 points. Quinn Canty and Grace Schroeder finished with 11 points each. The Whaler’s played their best in the second and third quarters - outscoring CCA 30-15 in that stretch.

“Mental game,” Fraker said when asked what her team’s first quarter struggles stemmed from. “They were getting frustrated with the calls and at halftime we said let us worry about that. Just play basketball. And that’s what they did. If they had a turnover, they made up for it on defense.”

Schroeder, a freshman guard, had 17 points in the Whaler’s 47-45 win on Friday. After a scoreless game on Saturday, she bounced back nicely with another double digit scoring performance.

“Composure and she’s not afraid to shoot,” Fraker said when asked what Schroeder has been doing well. “We just need to keep her in it mentally. If she has a miss, recovering from that and not being afraid to shoot again. We are all about shooting. We want the players to keep shooting. I am even encouraging our post-players to take the threes as you saw. That’s awesome. It’s all about confidence and if we play confident, we will play well as a team.”

On Tuesday, Nantucket soundly beat the Herons and were led by senior captain Maddie Lombardi, who finished the game with a game-high 15 points.

“I think we were still struggling a little bit to come out with that high intensity that you've seen in the second quarter of the last two games so that's going to be what we work on in practice the next couple days," Fraker said. "Overall though, amazing team win. Almost every single player on the team scored tonight. We were so close. Every single player contributed on the court, which is awesome. So we need that, especially as we go deeper and deeper into the season.”

Nantucket is now 5-3 this season and their next game is scheduled for Friday, January 31st at home against the Sturgis East Storm at 5 p.m.

The boys & girls swim teams were able to take care of business on senior night against the Barnstable Redhawks – beating them 98-40 and 92-70 respectively.

"A lot of really good swims," Whaler head coach Dylan Jones said. "We had several season best times, and I think a couple more cuts we made, which is awesome because we haven't really started (the process of resting before the league championship meet). Practices lighten up and we haven't started doing that yet. So if we're scoring best times and we haven't started that process yet, that's just awesome.”
