The Whaler girls lacrosse team exploded for 20 goals Tuesday afternoon against the Falmouth Clippers to win the game 20-4 and clinch the Cape & Islands league title. The win improve Nantucket’s record to 17-0 with three games remaining on their regular season schedule.

"(Rob Murray – Falmouth coach) does his research," Whaler head coach Jami Lower said after the game. "He watches a lot of film. If you listen to him coaching the game, he knows the plays. He does his research and he's a smart coach and it's just a more physical style of play which for our team can go either way. I thought it would be closer than it was, but it wasn't which was nice.”

Lower said she felt her team got off to an excellent start and while she felt every player performed well in the opening quarter, she felt Dylan Damian had a strong quarter with groundballs, Claire Misurelli was sharp in net with about five saves in the first 12 minutes.

“I don’t know that any player in particular stood out throughout the entire game, but each player had their moments,” Lower said.

The team was led in scoring by Emerson Pekarcik, who scored eight goals and added three assists. She was followed by Bailey Lower (five goals and five assists), Cydney Mosscrop (two goals and four assists), and Mayson Lower (two goals and two assists). Suz Peraner, Maddie Lombardi, and Grace Hanlon each scored one goal. Misurelli finished with seven saves.

Nantucket remains #1 in the Div. 4 state standings and will attempt to improve their record to 18-0 on Wednesday, May 22 when they travel to face Bridgewater-Raynham at 3:30 p.m. The Whalers played BR at home on April 30 and won 14-6.

The girls tennis team improved to 8-6 this season and snapped a three-game losing streak after beating the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins 4-1 on the road Tuesday afternoon. The results were as followed.

Fiona Keltz played as the Whaler’s top single, but lost her match in straight sets 3-6, 5-7. Keltz has been primarily a doubles player this season but performed well in her opportunity higher in the lineup.

“My opponent had good serves,” she said. “I felt like my backhands were more reliable than my forehands. Overall I did well and I need to improve on my serves.”

Andrea Bunlerssak played as the Whaler’s second single and won her match in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Bunlerssak, like Keltz, has been primarily a doubles player this season.

Viktoria Bozhkova played as the Whaler’s third single and won her match in straight sets 7-5, 6-1. She also got a shot to play singles after spending much of the season as a doubles player.

“My match was hard. My opponent was great at receiving ground strokes and her hustle was really good,” Bozhkova said. “I started to get exhausted after the first set, but I tried to stay on my feet and just play the ball.”

Sara Dussault and Vicky Todorova were the Whaler’s first doubles pairing and won their match in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

“We did a good job just playing the point,” Dussault said. “We tried very hard to not make unforced errors. I feel like my ground strokes and my serves were good. Vicky did very well at ball placement and making the opponents run to the ball. Something we need to work on is not getting sucked into the opponents way of the game.”

Sutton LeBrecht and Presy Penkova were the Whaler’s second doubles pairing and won their match in a deciding third set. They won set one 6-4 and lost set two 1-6. They won the third set 6-1.

“I think that we did okay at communicating but we weren’t very focused,” Penkova said. “When we were losing, we would get down which would affect how we played. Luckily, we were able to get it back together in the last set.”

Nantucket is currently the #19 seed in the latest Div. 4 state standings and will have a chance to improve to 9-6 on Thursday, May 23 on the road against the Sturgis East Storm at 4 p.m.
