Sports Roundup: Girls Soccer, Volleyball Earn Home Victories

This Whaler sports roundup includes an update and photos from the girls soccer team and the volleyball team following home victories on Friday, the boys soccer team following a road victory, and the football team following a road defeat.
Girls Soccer Earns First Win Of The Season
The Whaler girls soccer team had a strong performance Friday afternoon at home against the Monomoy Sharks, beating Monomoy 3-1 to earn their first victory of the fall season.
Head coach Doug LeBrecht was happy with the performance and proud of his team – calling the win super exciting as they look ahead to a matchup with Seekonk High School on Monday.
Nantucket benefitted from some strong play by goalie and senior captain Madden Myers, and offensively were led by junior captain Harper LeBrecht – who finished the day with two goals (the first and third goals of the day for Nantucket) as well as a primary assist on sophomore Ruby Steadman’s goal.
The Whalers are now 1-3 and their game against Seekonk is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. on the road. Below are some photos from Friday’s game.
Volleyball Sweeps Muniz Academy
The Whaler volleyball team went into Friday’s home matchup against Muniz Academy seeking to snap a two-match losing skid and get back to .500 on the season, and they did that with relative ease following a 3-0 win over the Phoenix.
Whaler head coach Makaila Lyons praised her team’s effort, in particular in the second set. Claire Zachary and Bessie Aguilar led Nantucket with five aces each, followed by Cariela Acosta, who finished with four aces.
Viki Bozhkova led the team with six kills and continues to have a strong impact on the court for the Whalers in her senior season. Acosta also had four kills while Julie Pires had three.
Nantucket, now 2-2 this season, will try to improve to 3-2 when they host the Rising Tide Herons on Monday, September 21st at 4 p.m. Below are some photos from Friday’s match.
In other Whaler sports news, the boys soccer team continues to win and impress early on this season – beating the Monomoy Sharks 6-1 on Friday in a road matchup against one of the Whaler’s biggest Cape & Island’s rivals. Stoyan Popov finished with three goals and an assist. Aldo Lemus scored once but had two assists. Calvin Guevara had one goal, and one assists. Tigger Sirisophapong had one goal, and Jason Ayala had an assist. The Whalers are now 4-1 this season and 4-0 in league play. They will attempt to improve to 5-1 on Thursday, September 24th at home against the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins at 4 p.m.
The football team went on the road to play the Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational/Technical High School Saturday afternoon and lost 28-0. The Whalers struggled to win at the line of scrimmage, and it ultimately allowed the Beavers to control the clock and play overall. Blackstone Valley began the game with a 15 play, 77-yard drive to take an early 7-0 lead and never looked back. Nantucket is now 1-1 this season and will try to win their second game of the fall on Saturday, September 26th on the road against Nashoba Valley Technical High School at 1:30 p.m.

The volleyball team will be at home playing the Rising Tide Herons at 4 p.m.
The field hockey team will be at home playing Dennis-Yarmouth High School at 4 p.m.
The golf team will be on the road playing St. John Paul II High School at 3:30 p.m.
The girls soccer team will be on the road playing Seekonk High School at 3:45 p.m.
Tuesday, September 22nd:
The boys and girls cross country teams will be at home for their first meet on Nantucket this fall when they host Nauset Regional High School at 4 p.m.
