This Whaler sports roundup includes updates and photos from the volleyball team and field hockey team’s games on Monday, as well as updates on the golf and girls soccer teams following road victories.
Volleyball Sweeps Rising Tide, Field Hockey Loses To DY
The Whaler volleyball team was able to beat the Rising Tide Herons at home Monday afternoon 3-0 to earn their second consecutive victory. They are now 3-2 this season.
Cariela Acosta led the Whalers by a wide margin in the ace department, finishing the match with a season-high 13. Mayra Aguilar had seven aces. Bessie Aguilar, Eva Blake, and Claire Zachary each had three. Senior captain Viki Bozhkova and Quinn Canty had three kills. Acosta finished with a team-high eight assists.
The Whaler field hockey team hosted the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins on Monday and lost 5-0. Their record is now 1-2-2 this season.

In other Whaler sports news, the golf team was able to beat the St. John Paul II Lions 272-274 on the road Monday afternoon and are now 5-2 this season. They have won four consecutive matches.

Nantucket head coach Sam Herrick said he is thrilled with the way his team is performing and says it may be the most competitive group he has coached in his five years leading the program.
“It was a big step for our program yesterday, and obviously St. John Paul is a very hard program to beat, so it feels good to beat them," Herrick said. “We have two Mr. Consistent awards. Lucien Silva has been within two shots of his stroke average every time he’s played and Alex Horton, we have played seven matches, and Alex has shot nine over in six of those matches and eight over in the other one. So he’s been incredibly consistent. Sam Lucas has been an incredible asset this year for us too. He has been great. Ed Tavares struggled a bit in his first two matches but has been rock solid ever since and is playing great. We have gotten contributions from all of our guys.”
The Whalers will attempt to improve to 6-2 on Thursday, September 24th when they host Cape Cod Academy at 3:45 p.m. It will be just the third home match for Nantucket this fall as they are scheduled to play six home matches in their final nine of the year.
The girls soccer team went on the road and beat Seekonk High School 3-2. Whaler head coach Doug LeBrecht said the game was a hard-fought battle all the way through, but his team found a way to score late.
“Ruby Steadman had the first goal from a Harper LeBrecht pass,” LeBrecht said. “(Freshman) Lila Garret had the second goal from an Emma Woodbury ball. It was a hard battle the entire game and 2-2 until four minutes were left when Emma passed to our striker Caroline Chatti, who got around the goalie and scored.”
The game-winner by Chatti was her second goal of the season as she continued her strong start to her freshman season with the varsity squad. LeBrecht said Harper LeBrecht and Amelia Fernandes “completely controlled” the last four minutes of play and kept the ball far away from their net and in Seekonk territory.
Nantucket is now 2-3 this season and will try to improve to .500 this season when they travel to play the St. John Paul II Lions on Thursday, September 24th at 3:30 p.m.

The girls soccer team will be on the road playing St. John Paul II High School at 3:30 p.m.
