Boys Hoops Win Pair Of Games, Now 7-11 This Season

The boys basketball team improved their record to 7-11 this winter following a 74-39 win over the Mashpee Falcons on Friday and a 75-73 win over Dennis-Yarmouth on Tuesday.
"One thing with this group is over the past couple of weeks, they've battled," Whaler head coach Willis Ferreira said. "We lost that heartbreak double overtime (against Ayer Shirley at home). I thought we gave it everything we had. We came out against Nauset, and I thought we played well. Then we've gone on the road the last couple of games and have found a way to win on the road. I'm really proud of everything. I know sometimes the record doesn't look that good, but we played a tough schedule and so we lost a couple of tight games that we wish we could have got back. You know, up on (Dennis-Yarmouth) 20 points in the fourth and blow that game. And then there's been some others along the way too that we kind of stubbed our toes.”
In the Whaler’s rematch against the Dolphins, they were led by their big three of freshman guard Burke Lombardi (22 points), junior big man Ethan Jarrett (21 points), and junior guard Vallon Jeanty (20 points). Jarrett led the way in the first half with 14 of his points coming in the game’s first 16 minutes, Lombardi took over in the second half with 15 points, and Jeanty had a balanced day - scoring eight in the first half and 12 points in the second half.
"Those three have been monsters for us all year," Ferreira said. "When those three are on a roll, it's hard to stop. Burke made some huge plays for us down the stretch man. For a young guy, he doesn't have a fear. I thought Ethan really held us down early. He's played so much better as of late at both ends of the floor defensively and not getting in foul trouble. He hit a three for us (Tuesday) and is stretching it a little bit more. Then Vallon, you know, he's one of those guys that I say, 'No, no, no' and then he makes plays. It's good to have those three throwing in 20.”
The Whalers are fighting to make it into the postseason and they will need to make it into the Top 32 of the Div. 4 bracket since they are four games under .500 with just two remaining on their schedule. In the MIAA’s latest power rankings, Nantucket was the #34 seed.
On Wednesday, February 19th, Nantucket will host the Monomoy Sharks at 5 p.m. for a game that has league implications as the winner will win the Cape & Islands League Championship, as well as state tournament implications as Monomoy is currently the #32 seed in the latest bracket. Nantucket lost to Monomoy on the road two weeks ago (February 5th) 55-52.
The Whalers will close out their regular season on Thursday, February 20thagainst Mashpee at 5:30 p.m. This will also be their senior game.
Indoor Track Competes In Championship Meet

The indoor track team traveled off island to compete in the MIAA Div. 5 championship meet at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center over the weekend, and three Whalers pieced together strong showings.
Rory Murray placed 13th in the two mile with a time of 10:45, which was also a personal best for him. He placed 16th in the 1000m with a time of 2:51.
Grace Hanlon placed ninth in the 1000m with a time of 3:20. Jaiden McInnis placed seventh in the 300m with a time of 36.64.
Boys Hockey Loses Senior Game 8-3

The boys hockey team celebrated their lone senior, Miles Beaudette, Saturday afternoon as they hosted Foxborough High School. The Whalers lost 8-3, but Beaudette scored one of the team’s goals and has been one of Nantucket’s best players all season.
“He did a great job, and he was a pleasure to have,” Nantucket head coach Jack Moran said of Beaudette. “Unfortunately, we only had him for one year. But I’m glad he came back and he was able to play. It was a joy to have him.
“I was glad to see him work as hard as he did and get some results out of his efforts,” Moran added. “It was obvious. He always plays hard but for his night, for his last game at home, it was nice for him to pop one in there.”

Junior assistant captains Canton Jenkinson and Soren Edwardes also scored goals in the game. Both have been key players for the program since their freshman seasons and will be at the core of the team’s roster next winter once again as seniors.
Due to poor weather, this game ultimately ended up being the final game of the season for Nantucket. They finished the season 1-14 in a year where they needed to play 11 freshmen and sophomores following the loss of several key senior players who graduated in June of 2024.

Girls Hoops Loses Three Games

The girls basketball team lost to Hull High School on the road 56-33 on Friday, lost to Martha’s Vineyard on Sunday 37-32, and lost to St. John Paul II 39-26 on Tuesday. The Whalers are now 9-9 this season with just one game remaining after Monday’s home matchup against the Vineyard was postponed due to weather and is unable to be made up prior to the Thursday deadline set by the MIAA so they can finalize state tournament brackets.
Nantucket was led in scoring against Hull by junior forward Marin Mooney and her 16 points. Against the Vineyard, the Whalers were led by senior captain Alana Ludvigson and her 14 points. On Tuesday against SJP, the Whalers were led by senior captain Maddie Lombardi and her 10 points.
Unless the cancelled Vineyard game goes down as a forfeit victory for Nantucket or Thursday’s game is cancelled, the Whalers will need to win on Thursday, February 20th at home against the Mashpee Falcons at 4 p.m. in order to reach 10 wins and finish with a .500 record or better on the season, which is what they need to do in order to qualify for a play-in matchup since they are outside of the Div. 4 top 32 (currently #49 in the latest rankings).
Thursday's game against Mashpee will also be the girl's senior game.
