Girls Tennis Beats Sturgis East On Senior Day

The girls tennis team, who celebrated their senior day before Tuesday’s match, were treated to head coach Luke Thornewill playing the National Anthem to kick things off - telling everyone in attendance “all good players deserve to have the National Anthem played for them.”

The girls went on to beat the Sturgis East Storm 4-1, and they will now be shifting their sights to the state tournament. In Tuesday’s state power rankings, the Whalers came in as the #9 seed in the Division 4 state bracket.

Against the Storm, here is how each player performed.

First Single:
Elis Vieth won her match 6-4, 6-3.

“I’m really happy with this win,” Vieth said. “The girl I played has really powerful serves and I struggled to put my racket on most of them. In the warmups, I thought I was going to lose 6-0, 6-0 because she was so powerful, but I just played more consistent than her. This is the first time this season I felt like I won to someone who I should’ve lost to. I’m really happy with how I played today and stuck with it. It was definitely a big upset, so I’m really pleased with this being the ending to the season.”

Second Single:
Andrea Bunlersaak lost her match 3-6, 4-6.

Third Single:
Vicky Todorova won her match in a tiebreaker. She won the first set 6-4, lost the second set 5-7, and won the tiebreaking third set 7-2.

“I had some good points and serves but was struggling staying in the game mentally,” Todorova said. “I could have done a better job moving my feet and staying relaxed. One thing I did well was putting pressure on my opponent when she was down. In the future, I need to improve my mental game and focus.”

First Doubles:
Sara Dussault and Sutton LeBrecht won their match in straight sets 6-0, 7-5.

Second Doubles:
Gabby Fee and Fiona Keltz won their match in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

The girls tennis brackets will be released on Friday, May 23rd at 11 a.m. More photos from Tuesday's match are at the bottom of this post.

Girls Lacrosse Overcomes Slow Start To Beat Monomoy

The girls lacrosse team earned a convincing 14-6 victory over the Monomoy Sharks on Monday. After Monomoy scored two quick goals to begin the game, Nantucket scored eight straight goals to run away with the game and sweep the season series. Nantucket beat Monomoy 8-4 on the road last week.

"We were so sloppy at the beginning,” Whaler head coach Jami Lower said. “I think we passed the ball out of bounds six or seven times. I'm happy they were able to shake it off. (Monomoy's) bus was late getting here and I think the extra time of being here a full 90 minutes before the game crushes us. But they shook it off and got it together.”

Nantucket was led by Mia Beaudette, who finished with three goals and four assists to lead all Whalers in scoring. Suz Peraner scored three goals. Mayson Lower, Louisa Beni, and Dylan Damian each had two goals. Carley Ray and Grace Hanlon each scored one goal.

Goalie Ella Douglas was able to shake the two quick goals she allowed and made seven saves on the day.

The Whalers are in the midst of a strong season. They are 11-4 and currently inside the top 10 of the latest MIAA Div. 4 state tournament bracket as the #7 seed as of Tuesday morning. They will be back in action Friday, May 23 at home against St. John Paul II at 4 p.m.
