This Whaler sports roundup includes an update on the girls tennis team following a road victory, the boys lacrosse team following another excellent matchup with the Falmouth Clippers, and the softball team.
Girls Tennis Beats CCA
The girls tennis team beat the Cape Cod Academy Seahawks 3-2 on the road Wednesday afternoon, improving their record to 10-4 this season.
Viki Bozhkova was the first singles player and won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
“My opponent was very good at keeping a pace, so when I would hit hard balls at her, she would hit them back at a similar speed which would create long rallies,” she said. “However, she would hit balls out and deep so I had to be careful of where I was standing on the line and being mindful of where the ball was going to bounce and how far it would fly, in case it went out. Something to work on for next time are my serves because they were very weak today and I double faulted way more times than I would have liked. Overall, it was a fun and close match and I’m going to use what I learned from this match for my next one on Friday.”
Sara Dussault was the second singles player and won in three sets. She lost the first set 5-7, won the second set 7-5, and won the final set 6-2.
“It was definitely a very challenging match, but I just kept my feet moving and played very smart,” she said. “I feel like I did all my ground strokes and just placing the ball. Overall, it was a very long match, but I kept my calm and played my own game.”
The first doubles pairing was Presy Penkova and Ashley De Oliveria, and they won in three sets. They won the first set 6-1, lost the second set 1-6, and won the final set 6-2.
Whaler head coach Luke Thornewill said after the match that Bozhkova was able to win by taking total control of the court. He said she showed an ability to charge the net for volley wins on every opportunity with a comfort level not seen before and won with no coaching at all.
Thornewill said Dussault won with her signature, calm, methodical game play and never give up attitude.
As for the first doubles pairing of Penkova and De Oliveria, Thornewill said the duo played an outstanding first set only and showed strong mental toughness to bounce back from their second set loss to win the third set.
Nantucket’s next match is scheduled for Friday, May 8th on the road against the Sturgis West Navigators at 4 p.m.
Boys Lacrosse Loses To Falmouth
The boys lacrosse team remains one of the top three teams in the Division 4 state tournament rankings and is having an excellent season, but on Wednesday they lost their second game of the season and second game against the Falmouth Clippers 9-7 on the road.
Whaler head coach Sam Aloisi said it was a great game against the Clippers, who are currently the #7 seed in Division 3, and that his team is playing great at the moment. He said there were a couple of bad bounces and mistakes, but otherwise his team was right in it the whole game.
“Good day overall,” Aloisi said. “(A) win would have been nice, but good experience going forward.”
Nantucket was led by Arann Hanlon in the scoring department. He finished with five of their seven goals. Nolen Mosscrop and Noah Stringer each had one goal. Jeremy Jenkinson finished with 11 saves.
