The Whaler golf team earned their 11th win of the regular season and clinched the Cape & Island’s Lighthouse Division League Title following a 250-261 victory over Cape Cod Academy Tuesday afternoon. Head coach Sam Herrick said he is proud of his golfers for their compete and said their performances all year helped him create Tuesday’s lineup and take advantage of their home-course advantage at Miacomet.

"I'm a big stats guy so I take every practice and every home match, and I put it into a spreadsheet and I'm kind of like figuring out where guys are excelling on certain holes or doing poorly on certain holes, and try to kind of address it that way," Herrick said. "And so today's match, today's lineup, although it consisted of five seniors today, I basically just looked at everybody's scores from Miacomet in the front nine and basically took the top eight scores from the season and put them out there today to try to close (Cape Cod Academy) out."

The top six scores out of eight Whaler golfers were as followed:

David Foley - 37

Ben Freeman - 42

Edward Taveras - 42

Colby Lucas - 43

Lucien Silva - 43

TQ Scarlett – 43

"If you look at some of the scores, Ben Freeman was two over going into his eighth hole and ended up taking a quadruple bogey," Herrick said. "He very easily could have shot 38 or 39 today and unfortunately took an eight on a par four and ended up shooting 42, which was great for him but (shooting) 42 is not really conducive of how well he played today.”

Herrick praised Foley for his play all year as he finished as the Whaler’s top golfer in 13 of 16 matches and has been their top golfer for two straight seasons.

"David Foley, I mean, you can't say enough good things about the guy," Herrick said. "He's been Mr. Consistent all year. 39 (Monday), 37 today. He's hit his stride. He's definitely playing some of the best golf of his life right now.”

Nantucket finished the season with an 11-5 record and will now compete in the south state tournament qualifiers next week with a chance to advance to the state championship round if they finish among the top three in the south qualifier. You can view more photos from Tuesday's matchup here.

After beginning their season 5-0, the Whaler field hockey team has lost three of their last four games, with three of those four losses being one goal defeats that came down to the end. On Tuesday, Nantucket traveled to the Cape to play St. John Paul II and lost 3-2. Marin Mooney continued her sensational season with another goal while Sadie Paterson continued her strong year with a goal.

The Whalers are still 6-4 and were #7 in the latest Div. 3 state tournament power rankings, so they remain in strong shape thanks to their half dozen wins and strong strength of schedule. They will try to right the ship and snap their three-game losing streak when they travel to play the Sturgis East Storm on Thursday, October 9th at 4 p.m.

The girls soccer team tied the Abington Green Wave 0-0 Monday afternoon in a game Whaler head coach Doug LeBrecht felt his team should have walked away with a victory in. He said they had a pair of injuries and players out sick, which contributed to the loss against an opponent they beat 4-2 on the island September 20th.

The Whalers are currently the #43 seed in the Div. 3 bracket and have six games remaining on their regular season schedule. If their record remains at .500 or better, they will clinch a spot in the state tournament.

Nantucket’s next game is scheduled for Wednesday, October 8th at home against the Monomoy Sharks at 3:30 p.m. The Whalers tied Monomoy 1-1 on the road September 12th.
