The Whaler boys hockey team improved to 3-5 this season following a 7-5 victory on the road against Foxborough High School – led by senior captain Canton Jenkinson who finished the game with a hat trick and two assists.

Nantucket was tied with Foxborough 2-2 after one period. Senior captain Jeremy Jenkinson and sophomore defenseman Parker Furtado scored the Whaler’s goals.

In the second period, both teams scored two goals apiece and entered the second intermission tied 4-4. Sophomore Justin Torres scored, as well as Canton Jenkinson – his first of three.

Nantucket head coach Jack Moran said afterwards that he was proud of his team’s ability to continue bouncing back in what was a back-and-forth game. He credited Canton Jenkinson for his strong performance and dominant third period.

Nantucket was ranked #24 in the latest MIAA power rankings released on Friday, and they will try to improve to 4-5 when they host St. John Paul II on Wednesday, January 28th at 5:15 p.m. SJP beat Nantucket 5-2 on January 7th in Hyannis and is currently the #12 seed in the Division 4 MIAA bracket.

The girls basketball team fell to 4-8 this season following a pair of losses. On Friday, Nantucket traveled to play Cape Cod Academy and lost 44-36.

On Saturday, the Whalers were the lone team in action – hosting Barnstable High School in the afternoon. Nantucket lost 52-31.

"In the first half the press got to us," Whaler head coach Angela Paterson said after Saturday’s game. "We turned the ball over a lot and weren't boxing out. We would just stand, turn and just look, and (Barnstable) was able to get second chance opportunities. I think that's why we were down big at the half. When it came to the second half though, we figured out the press to the point they actually took the press off, which was huge.

“I just don't think we were aggressive enough on the offensive end," Paterson continued. "Defensively, we always lock down teams. I think we held our own on them, especially their (best) player. We held her to six points. But again, offensively, I don't know if it's lacking confidence or if it's just, you know, not attacking their zone, which we didn't do today. I think that was the difference in the game.”

Grace Schroeder led the Whalers with 11 points on Saturday.

The Whalers will be back in action on Tuesday, January 27th when they travel to play Sturgis West at 3:15 p.m. You can view more photos from this game here.

The boys basketball team traveled to Falmouth on Friday and lost 72-62. Nantucket is now 6-4 this season, and if they want to get back in the win column this week, they will need to tighten up defensively.

The Whalers have scored over 60 points in every game this season, however in their four losses they have struggled mightily to contain their opponent’s offensively – allowing 91 points to Abington, 75 to Martha’s Vineyard, 82 to Nauset on Tuesday, and now 72 to Falmouth.

The Whalers remain in a strong position to return to the state tournament after missing it last year. They only need four more wins to clinch a record of .500 or better (19 games on the schedule, four more wins improves their record to 10-9).

Nantucket is currently the #27 seed in the Division 3 MIAA rankings, and will try to bounce back with a win on Tuesday, January 27th at home against Dennis-Yarmouth at 5 p.m.

Current MIAA Power Ranking Positions (Top 32 make the state tournament + any teams with a record of .500 or better):

Boys hockey is at #24

Boys basketball is at #27

Girls hockey
is at #34

Girls basketball
is at #49
