Sports Roundup: Softball Senior Day, Boys Lax Wins Again
David Creed •
This Whaler sports roundup includes photos from the softball team's senior game on Wednesday, an update on the boys lacrosse team following another impressive victory, and the girls lacrosse team following their 16th win of the season.
Softball Celebrates Seniors
The Whaler softball team lost to the Falmouth Clippers at home 5-3 Wednesday afternoon despite a late comeback bid led by an inside the park home run off the bat of freshman Chloe Washington, who will be a centerpiece of this Whaler lineup for years to come.
Nantucket is now 3-12 this season, and will not qualify for the state tournament this spring. They do have one more game on their schedule against the Martha's Vineyard Vineyarders on the road Saturday, May 23rd at 12:45 p.m. The Whalers will attempt to sweep the season series against their island rival after beating the Vineyard 15-6 in their season opener.
Below are some photos from the Whaler's senior ceremony taken by Chris Tran. The seniors on this team were Annie Ard, Shelbi Harimon, Aliza Mansfield, Lil Wullschleger, and Sophia Yelverton.
Boys Lax Beats Pembroke
The boys lacrosse team breezed their way to a 10-3 win at home against the Pembroke Titans Thursday afternoon - improving their record to 14-3 with one regular season game remaining on their schedule.
"I think (Pembroke) got two fast break goals and a man down goal," Whaler head coach Sam Aloisi said. "One was a broken ride fast break, another one was transition. Then that man down goal I mean, our defense played great. Our offense did okay. I mean, they're progressing, which is good."
The Whalers were led offensively by senior attacker Nolen Mosscrop and his team-high four goals. Mosscrop also tallied a pair of assists. Noah Stringer scored twice and had a team-high three assists. Arann Hanlon scored two goals and added one assist. Jake Grant scored once and had two assists. Marco La Chuisa scored one goal. Canton Jenkinson had an assist.
Senior captain and goalie Jeremy Jenkinson made eight saves.
Nantucket will host Martha’s Vineyard on Saturday, May 23rd at 11:30 a.m.

Girls Lax Wraps Up Regular Season
The girls lacrosse team finished up their regular season schedule on Wednesday with a 14-4 victory over Falmouth Academy on the road. The win stamped their record at 16-2.
The Whalers had very little trouble with their opponents all spring. They failed to score 10 or more goals just once all year in their 10-6 loss to the Nauset Warriors at home.
Their offense is stacked with talented players ranging from seniors such as Dylan Damian, who scored her 100th career goal during the season to budding juniors such as Grace Hanlon to young underclassmen that took the next step this spring like Louisa Beni, who is already a cornerstone of this team and will be for the next couple of years.
Nantucket is currently the #7 seed in the latest MIAA Division 4 State Tournament Power Rankings, with another updated chart being released on Friday, May 22nd at 11 a.m. The Whalers will await the release of the brackets to learn their round of 32 opponent, who they will likely play next weekend.
