The Nantucket volleyball team keeps on winning. They improved their record to 8-0 on Wednesday with a 3-0 win over the Sturgis East Storm at home in front of a packed Nantucket High School Gymnasium.
The sets were as followed:
Set 1: 25-20
Set 2: 25-20
Set 3. 25-17
The Whalers had to scratch and claw their way to victories in their first two sets. They were tied with the Storm 13-13 midway through both sets.
But the Whalers kept making quality plays late in each set to narrowly walk away with wins thanks to hustle plays by senior captain Kalina Natcheva, junior outside hitter Chloe Marrero, and sophomore libero Vicky Todorova.
In the third set with Nantucket up 10-6, the Navigators were starting to show some signs of life. But sophomore setter Bianca Santos made an excellent diving play to keep the point alive. It was the best play of the match and it helped Nantucket ultimately win the point and make it 11-6 in set three before they rode that momentum to the finish line and celebrated yet another win.

Head coach Andrew Viselli said that while his team is 8-0, there is a lot of work to do if they want to make a deep playoff run and go toe-to-toe with some of the state’s best.
“We got work to do and I don’t mean to keep pa-pooing every time we win but this is what happens when you’re good,” he said. “Are we good or are we just 8-0? Because that is a real question.”
The Whalers will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Holbrook for an 11:30 a.m. match. Nantucket hosted Holbrook in their season opening game on September 10, beating them in straight sets.
