This week’s Current Court Report includes arraignments and dispositions from the Monday and Tuesday Nantucket District Court sessions.
Sebastian Gregory Camacho, 28, of Nantucket was arraigned on May 27th charges of disorderly conduct, assault & battery on ambulance personnel, assault & battery on a police officer, and resisting arrest. He had not-guilty pleas entered on his behalf and was ordered to return to court June 29th for a pretrial hearing.
According to the police report, at approximately 8:30 p.m. the Nantucket Fire Department was dispatched to South Water Street after a male fell in front of one of the downtown bars. Massachusetts State Trooper David Keefe arrived on scene and observed the male laying on the sidewalk next to the bar entrance talking to an off-duty firefighter. He had his belongings scattered on the sidewalk, a small abrasion on his collarbone, and an “overwhelming odor of alcoholic beverage” emanating from his breath. The man was identified as Camacho.
Camacho allegedly answered the state trooper’s questions with heavily slurred speech and had glossy, bloodshot eyes.
“While speaking with Camacho, he made it abundantly clear that he had no interest in being medically evaluated or transported and expressed his displeasure with our assistance in an array of colorful language,” the report says.
When Camacho was asked how much he had to drink that night, he gave several answers including “like f***ing 10.”
When NFD arrived on scene, Camacho was allegedly uncooperative and began yelling at firefighters on scene. They requested him to be evaluated in the ambulance and Camacho then went “on tangents of dialogue that made little to no sense given the situation.”
After NFD provided a medical contact at Nantucket Cottage Hospital with his vitals, the doctor determined she would not be comfortable with Camacho signing a medical refusal and requested he be transferred for further evaluation. Camacho reiterated he did not want to be transferred because he would not be able to afford the medical bill.
“I determined that he was not able to care for himself and by allowing him to simply walk away from this scene, I would be leaving him at risk of serious bodily injury to himself based on his impairment,” trooper David Keefe said in his report.
As Keefe and a firefighter began directing Camacho to the back of the ambulance, he allegedly continued swearing at them and required their support to stand up.
“As Camacho entered the roadway from the sidewalk, he became irate and began screaming, clenching his fists, and flailing his arms in the air,” the report said. “Just before he entered the ambulance, Camacho pushed (the firefighter) and I away and began running down South Water Street in the direction of oncoming traffic. By running down the middle of a crowded and busy street in the condition Camacho was in, he placed himself in a position that could have very likely affected nearby motorists and pedestrians. This recklessly created a risk of public alarm by hazardous acts that served no legitimate purpose. I quickly gained control of Camacho's right arm, turned him around, and held him against the side of the ambulance door to prevent him from fleeing again. While attempting to place Camacho in handcuffs, he resisted by keeping both fists clenched and forcefully pulled his hands and arms inward towards his chest.”
Camacho was eventually handcuffed and placed under arrest.
