An island resident is behind bars after being arraigned in Nantucket District Court late last week on rape and assault charges.

The suspect, Roberto Ramos, 46, of Nantucket, was involved in a domestic violence incident on July 10, according to police. In the aftermath, the alleged victim told investigators that she had been sexually assaulted less than 24 hours before the incident on the morning of July 9.

Ramos was arraigned on a July 9 charge of rape and July 10 charges of assault and battery on a family/household member and strangulation. He had not-guilty pleas entered on his behalf. He has been held in the Barnstable House of Corrections since his arraignment last week. He will continue to be held in jail until his next court hearing on July 28, which will be a probable cause hearing, as the Cape & Islands' District Attorney’s office continues to evaluate whether it will seek an indictment in Nantucket Superior Court.

According to the police report, officers were dispatched to a Hinsdale Road residence for a reported domestic assault and battery at midnight on July 10. Over an hour later, on July 10 at 1:45 a.m., police spoke to the victim at the police station. The victim reported the rape to the police and said it took place on Wednesday, July 9, at approximately 6:30 a.m.
