Four Suspects Charged After Going On A Spending Spree With Lost Credit Card They Found At The Chicken Box

Two men were in Nantucket District Court Monday morning facing charges that allege they found a credit card on the floor of the Chicken Box in early June and proceeded to purchase over $18,000 in gift cards, food, and clothing over a 25-day span at various establishments on the island including Cumberland Farms, Stubbys, and Stop & Shop until the card stopped working. Nantucket Police believe the larceny case involved a four-person scheme. The two other suspects have since returned to Miami, Florida, and warrants have been issued for their arrest.

Joan Alvarez Colado, 48, of Nantucket, and Geovanny Guillen, 31, of Nantucket, are facing June 5 charges of larceny over $1,200 by a single scheme and receiving a lost credit card. They had not-guilty pleas entered on their behalf and were ordered to return to court Sept. 15 for a pretrial hearing.

According to the police report, Colado and Guillen were among the four individuals involved in the alleged larceny. Daniel Huet, 28, and George Fernandez, 29, were also allegedly involved but have since returned to Florida, according to their former boss. Nantucket Police Chief Jody Kasper told the Current that warrants have been issued for the arrest of both Huet and Fernandez and that both have been charged with larceny over $1,200 by a single scheme and receiving a lost credit card.

Police said that the alleged victim's son lost a Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card in early June. The credit card owner told police he reviewed the credit card statements and noticed $18,562.95 in purchases that were not authorized by him or any of the other five authorized users between June 5 and June 30.

The card was found on July 2 on the side of Hooper Farm Road near Shady Maple Lane before being returned to the alleged victim, but the damage had already been done. Police say they have obtained video surveillance footage from the Stop & Shop on Sparks Avenue, Stubbys, Sunken Ship, and both Cumberland Farms locations on the island, which shows several purchases totaling approximately $2,613.77. All four individuals are allegedly observed either making purchases with the stolen credit card or being present while the card was being used in the video.

Two of the purchases allegedly made and caught on camera were by Alvarez Colado at both Cumberland Farms locations, where he purchased one $500 American Express Card on June 28 and one American Express Card on June 30.

A search warrant was issued by the Nantucket District Court for 7 Surfside Drive in early July, which was the residence of the four suspects. Upon arrival, police were able to locate the tan sweatshirt Colado was wearing during his stops at Cumberland Farms and a Cuban passport.

When officers went into Guillen’s room, they found nine American Express Cards and one Visa gift card inside a bag with his passport. Police also found two Stubbys hats that were purchased with the card, as well as a Miami Heat jersey and Nike sandals that Guillen was wearing during the unauthorized Stubbys purchases.

Once Colado and Guillen were arrested, Guillen allegedly admitted to police that he and his three accomplices found the credit card on the floor of The Chicken Box “about a month ago” and that all four of them purchased gift cards, food, and clothing with the gift cards. Guillen said they used the credit card from the moment they found it “until it stopped working.” He also admitted to being present when the card was thrown out the window.
