The Nantucket Clothing Company, a retail staple in downtown Nantucket, is closing its doors after 31 years.

The clothing shop on South Water Street announced this week that the summer of 2026 would be its final one in business.

"We are proud of what we built over the years-growing a mostly T-Shirt business into a destination for distinctive high-quality sweatshirts for adults and kids," said Lisa McKechnie, who ran the store with her husband Eric McKechnie. "Eric is most proud to have employed over 100 kids, many for their first job. We have watched them grow up, go to college, get jobs and have families."

McKechnie said the building at 6 South Water Street has been sold, but property records indicate the sale has not yet closed.

"As far as the building, we are confident that we sold to people who will be worthy stewards of the property," McKechnie told the Current. "We leave with tremendous gratitude for our employees, our customers and the Nantucket community that has supported us for more than three decades."
