An island resident died after being pulled out of a house fire Tuesday night on Green Meadow Drive.
Firefighters, along with Nantucket Police and State Troopers, responded to the home at 6 Green Meadow Drive just after 7 p.m. and discovered smoke pouring out of the front door and windows.
Firefighters entered the house to conduct a search and the man was carried out of the front door shortly thereafter, along with a dog that was discovered inside the home. The victim was transported by ambulance to Nantucket Cottage Hospital while police provided oxygen to the dog on the front lawn. A woman later came and took the dog away, and it was transported to Offshore Animal Hospital for further care.
The man was said to be in critical condition Tuesday night after being transported to the hospital, but Fire Chief Michael Cranson confirmed Wednesday morning that he did not survive.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with the resident’s family and friends during this difficult time,” Cranson said. “We extend our appreciation to all first responders on Nantucket and the Massachusetts State Police for their professionalism and teamwork in handling this tragic incident."
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the state Department of Fire
Services, the Massachusetts State Police, the Nantucket Fire Department, and the
Nantucket Police Department.
Cranson stated one firefighter sustained minor injuries and received treatment following the fire Tuesday night.
Emergency radio dispatches Tuesday night indicated the man was on the second floor of the home when he called 911 to report the fire, but dispatchers later told responding firefighters that he became unresponsive over the phone.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates.
