Nantucket police officers and detectives swarmed a house in a mid-island neighborhood Wednesday afternoon to arrest a juvenile suspect.
Four Nantucket Police Department cruisers - along with two unmarked police vehicles - and approximately a dozen officers and detectives approached a residence on Pakanoket Lane, near the Nashaquisset neighborhood off Surfside Road around 5 p.m. A Nantucket Fire Department ambulance staged at the nearby high school as part of the operation.
"The Nantucket Police Depart Patrol Section and Detective Unit executed an arrest and search at a Pakanoket Lane address," Nantucket Police Department Lt. Angus MacVicar said. "An arrest was made without incident and property related to the search was recovered. The arrested person is a juvenile so no further details will be released."
According to the police log, the suspect was a 17-year-old male.
Information gathered by the Current following the arrest on Wednesday revealed that the large police presence was due to a prior juvenile incident in which a suspected firearm was believed to be involved.
Detectives and officers were spotted walking into and out of the residence with cameras.
One neighbor of the residence at 5 Pakanoket Lane said a smaller police presence had been staging in the neighborhood for about an hour before the suspect was arrested. Another neighbor said they saw a police officer with a rifle drawn near the scene.
