Disappointed, But Not Deterred

To the editor: The recent ruling of the Nantucket Superior Court which upheld the decision of the Nantucket Conservation Commission to permit the expansion of the current geotubes was a disappointment. However, we are not deterred. There are still many steps remaining before any expansion of the geotube seawall can actually happen.
Over the past 18 years, Nantucket has voted five times to preserve our public beaches as open space. The defeat of Article 73 at the May 2026 Town Meeting denied the use of the public beach below the bluff in Sconset for erosion control purposes once again. We trust that Town leadership has heard the message.
We will continue to do all that we can to preserve and protect Nantucket’s coastal resources, especially our public beaches. It is gratifying to know that our fellow islanders agree.
