Indivisible Nantucket On How And Why It Will Protest In Downtown Nantucket
Willy LeMay •
To the editor: We at Indivisible:Nantucket are planning a peaceful rally and protest on Saturday October, 18, 2025 as our local “NO KINGS” event. Upwards of 2,500 “NO KINGS” events are being planned nationwide to protest the daily outrages of the Trump administration. So if you’re off-island, a quick Google search will get you to an event in your area. This will be the largest coordinated demonstration of “We the People” in our nation’s history. We had the first “NO KINGS” protest and march this past June and roughly 650 people showed up. We are hoping to get at least that number this time around and hopefully many more!
We have applied for and been granted a street closure permit to encompass Main Street from the Pacific Bank to Federal Street. The permit allows for a 12 p.m. to 3 m. closure on Oct. 18. Our event will run from about 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Between setup and breakdown, we will be diligent in returning Main Street to regular form ASAP. As is the case with the red ticket drawing in December, a clear lane will be kept open from upper Main Street to the right turn on Orange Street.
Some of you may be asking yourselves, “What’s the point?” Well, in less than nine months we have watched Donald Trump bully law firms, universities, media companies etc. into cancelling any DEI programs, muzzling comedians and demanding large sums of money just to stay in the game. We have watched the systematic dismantling of all our government services and they are not done yet. We have watched as an unelected billionaire and his band of computer hackers infiltrated all the federal mainframe computers and absconded with all our information; personal, medical and financial. We are especially incensed at the weaponization of I.C.E agents as they are deployed across the country where without warning or warrants they are snatching people off the streets and disappearing them to gulags in other countries. We are appalled that because of this unfit individual in the White House we are now considered as totally untrustworthy by all our allies in NATO and elsewhere. Alliances that were built over the past 80 years after World War 2. Instead Trump would rather cozy up to Putin and Erdogan and Kim Jong Un as a wanna-be-dictator.
I could go on and on. We are in unprecedented and dangerous times. The parallels to 1930s Germany are too real to ignore. The same authoritarian playbook used then is being deployed in these United States. We will do what we can to make sure this does not happen because we are already way too close to a fascist state than anyone could have imagined just a few short months ago. We are not being alarmists. The assaults on our precious First Amendment are accelerating. Trump and his cohorts are bent on stifling all dissent. The freedom to speak your mind is guaranteed in the Constitution but they have been wiping their shoes with our founding document for nine months now. The ever quickening pace of daily outrages from ICE agents kicking down apartment doors in the middle of the night in Chicago and zip-tying little kids together to the use of the National Guard in cities and states run by Democratic governors and mayors to quell imaginary violence is beyond the pale. The most unfortunate part of all this is that the mainstream media is not reporting most of what is happening in the streets.
We invite all concerned Nantucket citizens to join us for some music, a public reading of the Declaration of Independence and our Bill of Rights and commentary from local luminaries. We will also do a march around the downtown area before we disband for the day. If you’ve been asking yourself what you can possibly do to help in these dire times then this is your chance. If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.
Sincerely,
Willy LeMay
