Recently graduated Nantucket High School seniors Bailey Lower and Cole Chambers both played significant roles in helping their teams reach new levels of success never before seen in the girls and boys lacrosse programs over the course of the past four years, and both of them received recognition from the Boston Globe for their efforts as they close the book on their high school sports careers.

Lower, who will be taking her talents to Vanderbilt University’s Div. 1 lacrosse program next spring, was named the Boston Globe Div. 4 girls lacrosse athlete of the year. Lower finished the season with an incredible 135 goals and 97 assists – helping the Whalers reach their third consecutive state quarterfinal.

Lower is one of just three Nantucket High School students to ever be named as an All-American, and the first to become a two-time All-American.

Lower finished her career with 393 and 245 assists for 638 points. For perspective, she accumulated more points than Falmouth Academy’s Jane Earley, who has been considered by many to be the best girls lacrosse player to come out of the Cape & Islands.

Earley made headlines after becoming just the 10th high school girls lacrosse player in U.S. history to score 400 career goals in 2018. Earley finished her high school career with 479 goals and 141 assists (620 points) in five varsity seasons compared to Lower’s four – which included a shortened freshman year in 2021.

As for Chambers, he was named as a Boston Globe All-Scholastic for his work on and off the field.

Chambers ended his lacrosse career by helping the boys lacrosse program capture their first state championship in program history. Chambers scored two goals in the state title game against the Sandwich Blue Knights on June 15 and finished the season with 41 goals and 38 assists for 79 points – leading the Whalers in scoring.

Chambers served as Nantucket’s captain and finished his career with 150 goals and 115 assists for 265 points. He received high praise from his teammates and head coach Sam Aloisi all season long, and was featured by the Current early in the season as the athlete of the month in April.
