Sports Roundup: Boys Tennis & Boys Lax Lose Home Matchups
David Creed •
This Whaler sports roundup includes an update on the boys tennis team following a pair of home defeats and the boys lacrosse team following a rare loss as their regular season winds down.
Boys Tennis Loses Two Close Matchups
The boys tennis team fell to 8-7 on the season following a 3-2 loss to Falmouth Academy on Friday and a 3-2 loss to St. John Paul II High School on Saturday. The Whalers have one more game left this season, which means they cannot finish below .500 this spring and will officially clinch a spot in the MIAA Division 3 state tournament.
On Friday, senior captain Nik Krastev won his first singles match in straight sets 7-6, 6-2 against a strong opponent in Fletcher Parsons. Knox Keating continued his strong season as the second single for the Whalers with a win.
On Saturday, it was the doubles pairings who performed well with first doubles pairing Toni Todorov and Max Iancu winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 and second doubles pairing Dalton Frazier and Prosha Artemenko winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
The Whalers will close out their regular season on Tuesday, May 19th at 1 p.m. against Martha's Vineyard. Below are some photos from the weekend.
Boys Lax Loses To Shrewsbury
The boys lacrosse team hosted the Shrewsbury Colonials, the #13 seed in the Division 1 state bracket as of Friday morning, and lost 4-3 Saturday afternoon on the island.
Nantucket came up just short of a comeback after falling into a 4-0 hole. They weren't able to get on the scoreboard until senior attacker Nolen Mosscrop made it a 4-1 game. The Whalers would go on to score two more goals, including a nifty behind the back goal by senior midfielder Arann Hanlon, but were unable to complete the comeback.
Head coach Sam Aloisi said after the game that Shrewsbury deserved a lot of credit for how well they played defensively in the first half, but the Whalers also knew that because of how much man defense they were playing, that the Colonials would inevitably get tired as the game progressed.
"That end really killed us," Aloisi said. "Throwing balls away. We lost the ground balls today. We weren't picking them up and they were. At the end, two or three possessions, we just lost the ball on unforced errors, which hurt, and also spotting them three goals. I mean, they had one silly fast break in the second, they got one goal in the third where I don't know what our defense was thinking, which is very uncharacteristic of them. A few simple mistakes, but I mean the effort was there, the hustle, and our defense played great. We just didn't find enough goals. I feel like if we had another two or three minutes, we could have pulled that out, but we didn't."
The Whalers will host Pembroke High School on Thursday, May 21st at 4 p.m. The Titans are currently the #12 seed in Division 3. Nantucket played them earlier this season in Pembroke and won 7-5.
