This Whaler sports roundup includes an update on yet another victory for the girls tennis team, a road victory for the boys lacrosse team, the softball team following a mercy rule win, the baseball team following a road game, the girls lacrosse team, and the sailing team.
Girls Tennis Wins Seventh Straight Match
The girls tennis team beat the Sturgis East Storm 4-1 Wednesday afternoon to extend their win streak to seven matches and their overall record to 8-3.
Viki Bozhkova played first singles and won in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.
“My opponent did a very good job in hitting hard angles and interesting forehand tactics, which were hard for me to get,” Bozhkova said. “She would also return a lot of my harder balls and catch me off guard, which helped her score a lot of the points that she did. However, today my serves were very good, which was a good way to start new sets if I was in trouble or just needed a few points. I did a good job in finding her weaker shot, which was her backhand and hitting more to that side. Overall, it was a good match that I learned a lot from but next time I need to stay more on my toes and get more fired up despite being tired.”
Sara Dussault played second singles and won in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
“I feel like I played pretty well,” Dussault said. “I was just having fun and being very aggressive. I think me and my opponent were pretty evenly matched, I was just more aggressive and played a little smarter. Since I was up by some points, I did play around with my game.”
Gabby Nikolova played third singles and won her match in straight sets 6-4, 7-5.
“While I did get frustrated at one point, I was glad to finally play a stronger opponent,” Nikolova said. “At first I was too relaxed and underestimating my opponent. I quickly realized that I need to play my game and keep my feet moving. I was able to run back and forth across the court to return balls, and I was strategically placing them cross court or down the line. The second set was very stressful. At one point I was down 1-4. I took a few deep breaths and got my game back. I was playing super defensively and just aiming to get the ball over the net. The rallies last even longer when I was hitting the ball in the middle of the court, but it forced my opponent to make mistakes. To improve, I obviously need to work on my mentality and not losing myself. When I am comfortable and confident, I play much better and I will use that going forward in the season. Overall, I’m very happy with this match because it will prepare me for harder teams later on in the week.”
The fourth and final victory for the Whalers was Sutton LeBrecht and Evie Phelps, who played first doubles and won in straight sets 6-0, 6-1.
“Despite the bad weather we had a really good match today,” LeBrecht said. “I can definitely tell we have adapted to each other’s playing style really well. I think we make a really good team now. We know how to use the court space to our advantage. I need to work on my serves though.”
Nantucket will try to improve to 9-3 when they host Rising Tide on Friday, May 1st at 4 p.m.

Softball Explodes For 29 Runs To Beat Barnstable
The Nantucket softball team hosted the Barnstable Red Hawks Thursday afternoon and improved to 3-4 following a 29-17 victory that was won following a 15-run sixth inning for the Whalers to come from behind and secure the mercy rule win.

Girls Lacrosse Loses First Game Of The Season

Louisa Beni led the Whalers with two goals while Grace Schroeder, Carley Ray, Rowan Paul, and Myah Johnson each scored one goal.

Sailing Completes Two Regattas
The sailing team was able to win their regatta on Wednesday at home against Cape Cod Academy in what head coach Bruce Turner called a fun day on the water in windy conditions.
On Thursday, the Whalers hosted the Falmouth Clippers and lost 3-0. Turner said the conditions were the opposite, with light winds that nearly prevented them from getting three races in. He said the JV sailors performed well in both regattas.
