Baseball Loses To Greater Lowell Tech
The Whaler baseball team, ranked #41 in the MIAA Division 3 state tournament, lost to the #24 seeded Greater Lowell Tech Gryphons 9-4 Thursday afternoon on the road in the preliminary round – marking the end of a very successful season that saw Nantucket’s baseball program win 10 games for the first time in a decade and return to the playoffs for the first time in five years, when all teams qualified for the tournament.
A seven run third inning for the Gryphons doomed the Whalers, as well as several errors. Just one of Greater Lowell Tech’s nine runs were earned.
Senior captain Ronald Del Rosario Gomez went three for four at the plate. Sophomore outfielder Justin Torres went one for four with a two-RBI single. Senior Henry Tejada had the only extra base hit of the day for Nantucket, hitting a double to left field in the top of the third inning. Senior Colby Lucas and junior Eli MacIver also had two-hit games.
Nantucket finished their season with a 10-9 record including their tournament game. Below are some photos taken during the game by senior Andrew Lavin.
Girls Tennis Loses To Boston Latin Academy
The girls tennis team, ranked 18th in the MIAA Division 3 State Tournament, lost to #15 Boston Latin Academy 5-0 in their Round of 32 matchup Thursday afternoon, capping off what has otherwise been a strong season for the program.
The Whalers moved up to Division 3 after spending the previous several years in Division 4, and still managed to earn a top 20 seed in the tournament bracket.
Nantucket finished their season with a 12-7 record including their tournament matchup. After beginning the season 1-3, the Whalers went on to win eight straights games and 11 of their next 12 games to solidify their position in the tournament bracket.
"What a great season," Whaler head coach Luke Thornewill said after the match. "We lost today, but as always our athletes gave it all they had. They fought valiantly against a superior team. They battled with their heads and their hearts. For many of them it was their last high school game and I could see emotions surfacing as their matches ended. They love the game of tennis. We all do. What they don’t yet appreciate is this isn’t the end... it’s the beginning of their journey with tennis, and their games will get better and better. It’s a life sport."
